How to Choose Your Next Retreat

With so many retreat options available on the market today, it can be difficult to choose just one.

They all look so fun! So full of adventure! How can you possibly narrow the selections down?!

Having recently attended my first retreat with Fit Life Creation, I was able to pinpoint some major questions that arose and how to answer them prior to making my decision to go.

Many of these questions are ones you have to ask of yourself, not necessarily the retreat leader(s) or travel agency. It all comes down to what you feel is best for you, your goals, and your wallet. Gather the pertinent details first, then evaluate where you’re at by asking yourself the questions below.

1. Why do I want to attend a retreat?

Is it a business retreat for entrepreneurs where you will learn business skills? Health & wellness retreat for individuals looking to become more connected with their body & soul? Couples retreat for some much needed getaway time?  Knowing your “why” and taking a deep look at your intentions will help you decide which type of retreat you want to attend. There are many out there, and you don’t need to limit yourself to just one, as long as you understand the benefits and how it will contribute to your personal (and even professional) growth.

2. Where do I want to go?

Many retreat destinations are pre-determined by the leaders or agency, whether domestic or international. Is there a certain place that’s been on your bucket list? A retreat could be a great way to visit that location. Or maybe the retreat is being held at a location you’ve already visited plenty of times, and you want do wait it out and do something a little different. Remember, there will always be other retreats to choose from – it’s okay to keep searching if the current destination isn’t really your cup of tea.

3. How much do I want to spend?

Cost is more often a factor than not. If you have a budget, research the overall expenditure that will go into attending a retreat and see how it fits within your spending plans. Additional expenses may include but isn’t limited to:

  • Flights & Luggage
  • Cab fare / local transportation / car rentals
  • Meals (check to see if all inclusive)
  • Excursions
  • Local shopping
  • If traveling internationally: consider possible cost of VISA or international phone plan (if applicable)

Many retreats are all inclusive and include your lodging, meals, and shuttle car (to/from airport) in the cost of your registration. For example, the Influencer Retreat by Fit Life Creation included all local transportation around Costa Rica, healthy meals 3x per day and even all of our excursions which included zip lining at an adventure park and visiting a local animal rescue. It’s important to thoroughly research what’s included so you can factor in any added expenses and how much value you’re receiving for your investment.

4. Who will be attending?

While this question may be one considered less than the others, it’s still a very important one. Research who the general attendance will be, and find out if they are like-minded people. Nobody wants to be stuck in a resort with a party pooper or brings negative energy to the group. Inquire with the organizer about what kind of rules or guidelines are in place for attendees so you know what to expect from leadership. Some retreat organizers may also go through a screening process prior to allowing you to register to ensure quality attendance.

5. What are the potential take-aways?

Workshop in the Pool!

When I was making a decision on my first retreat, I weighed all of the above options. What did I get for my money? What would I learn? Who would I meet? Where would we get to explore?

If you are considering a retreat, or even multiple retreats, make a list of the pros and cons. What are your non-negotiables? Are there red flags? Write those down and take everything into mind as you prepare for your retreat experience. If it feels right, go for it!
